WEAVING WITH RAFFIA WORKSHOP

KAIELA ARTS

Participants gathered to experience the rich tradition of weaving in this welcoming workshop facilitated by Kaiela Arts and led by local First Nations artists.

As stories, techniques and cultural knowledge were shared, participants learned simple weaving methods using natural and dyed raffia to create their own bracelet. More than a creative activity, the workshop offered an opportunity to sit, weave and yarn together, reflecting the important role weaving plays in strengthening identity, kinship and connections to Country across generations.

The workshop provided a meaningful cultural experience that celebrated the continuation of First Nations knowledge and the value of learning through shared making, conversation and community. It was a thoughtful addition to the 2026 Shepparton Arts Festival program, highlighting the importance of preserving and celebrating living cultural traditions.
