COSI

BY LOUIS NOWRA

Presented by the Shepparton Theatre Arts Group as part of the 2026 Shepparton Arts Festival, Cosi captivated audiences with its moving blend of humour, humanity and heartfelt storytelling.

Set in a Melbourne psychiatric institution during the 1970s, the much-loved Australian play followed a young director's ambitious attempt to stage Mozart's Così fan tutte with a group of patients. Against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, the production explored themes of belonging, identity, compassion and the transformative power of the arts with warmth, wit and sensitivity.

Through outstanding performances from the local cast and creative team, Cosi reminded audiences of theatre's unique ability to foster empathy, challenge perceptions and bring people together. The production was a standout contribution to the Festival program and a testament to the enduring strength of community theatre in Greater Shepparton.
